The end of China's milk scandal company

Apr/09

According to a Reuters report, the Sanlu Dairy Group, the company at the centre of China’s melamine in milk crisis was finally sold for €70m to a Chinese food group, Beijing Sanyuan Group Ltd. The company had declared bankruptcy and its former chairwoman Tian Wenhua jailed for life and fined almost €3m for her role in the crisis.

With nearly 300,000 people ill, six children dead and products recalled and destroyed around the world, the crisis has had a major impact on “brand China”. Largely as a result of international concern over the melamine incident as well as several other incidents, the Chinese government has announced a major overhaul of its food safety practices with the establishment of a Food Safety Commission to oversee reform.
